PDC Cutter for PDC Core Bit

undefined

PDC core bit is constructed with PDC cutters and matrix body or steel body. PDC core bit is ideal for application with high-powered drill rigs operating at relatively low rotation speeds. But life and penetration can be much better compared with surface set bits.

PDC core bit has numerous sintered polycrystalline-diamond studs on the matrix body. The PDC cutter consists of ultra-fine synthetic diamond particles sintered together by high pressure and high temperature. At the bottom of this diamond layer is a tungsten carbide stud which is brazed directly into the bit body. Two main types of PDC cutters are available for PDC core bit: conventional flat design or dome. PDC cutters are set on the crown and can take accommodate the very large compressive and shear loads generated during drilling. There are about ten PDC cutters on the matrix body, depending on the size of the core bit. The bigger the bit is, the higher the number of PDC cutters on it.

PDC core bit has flushing holes or an open center and adjustable of the fixed nozzle. Nozzles are needed because they provide turbulent jet flow through bits to keep the cutting areas clean.

Most homogeneous sedimentary rock formations like shale, dolomite, limestone, and sandstone are easily worked on with a PDC core bit. For harder abrasive formations such as dolomite and limestone, matrix body PDC core bit is commonly used because they provide excellent resistance to wear. Steel body PDC core bit is usually used when working on softer formations like sandstone. The core bit applies a shaving or shearing action when encountering the formation. The rotation speed of the core bit is significantly higher than other typical rotary bits. Hydraulics of PDC core bit has a design to keep the hole clean and the core bits cool, thus increasing longevity.
