What is Tungsten Carbide??
Tungsten carbide was first extracted from steel and properly identified around the mid-19th century.
Tungsten carbide is a compound of tungsten and carbon atoms. It has superior durability and high melting point which is up to 2,870℃. Due to its durability and high melting point, tungsten carbide is widely used in applications that require high wear and impact resistance.
Tungsten itself has a very high resistance to corrosion. The hardness of tungsten is around 7.5 on the Mohs Scale which is soft enough to be cut with a hacksaw. Tungsten can be used for special welding applications and in medical equipment. Tungsten is also quite malleable and can be extruded into wires.
When tungsten is alloyed with carbon, the hardness would increase. The hardness of tungsten carbide is 9.0 on the Mohs Scale which makes tungsten carbide the second hardest material in the world. The hardest material is diamond. The basic form of tungsten carbide is a fine gray powder. After it goes through sintering for industrial machinery cutting tolls, and other industries, it can be pressed and formed into different shapes.
The chemical symbol for tungsten carbide is WC. Normally, tungsten carbide is simply called carbide, such as carbide rod, carbide strip, and carbide end mills.
Because of tungsten carbide’s high hardness and scratch resistance, it is widely used in almost every industry. It can be used as cutting tools for machining, ammunition, mining tools, surgical instruments, medical tools, etc.
Tungsten carbide often comes in grades. The grades are determined by the binders in tungsten carbide. Commonly used binders are cobalt or nickel. Every company has its own grades to identify itself from others.
