How Cemented Carbide Rods Change From Powder To Carbide Blank?
We all know tungsten carbide rods are wildly used in making tools. Tungsten carbide round bar is used in metalworking, woodworking, papermaking, packaging, printing, chemical, petroleum, metallurgy, electronics, and defense industries.
Carbide rod is suitable for machining common steel, cast iron, carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steel, nickel-based alloy, titanium alloy, heat-resistant alloy steel, hardened steel, glass fiber, plastic aluminum, hardened steel, composite wood, high hardness aluminum alloy, acrylic, PCB materials, etc.
Do you know how cemented carbide rods be made from the powder to the carbide blank?
Cemented carbide rod, Generally made from WC powder and Cobalt powder.
The main Production Process is as below:
1) Formula as to grade
2) Powder wet milling
3) Powder drying
4) Extrusion or dry-bag isostatic pressing
5) Rods drying
Formula as to grade
Firstly the WC powder, cobalt powder, and doping elements will be mixed according to the standard formula by experienced Ingredients.
For example, for our grade UBT20, it will be 10.2% Cobalt, and the balance is WC powder and doping elements.
Mixing and wet ball milling
The mixed WC powder, cobalt powder, and doping elements will be put into a wet milling machine. The wet ball milling will last 16-72 hours as to different production technologies.
After the mixture, the powder will be spray dried to get dry powder or granulate.
If the forming way is extrusion, the mixed powder will be mixed again with Adhesive.
Extruding or dry-bag isostatic pressing
Extruding or dry-bag isostatic pressing both our forming way for tungsten carbide rods.
For the cemented carbide rods diameter ≥16 mm, big diameter rods, we will use dry-bag isostatic pressing way.
For the carbide rod's diameter less than 16 mm, we will use extruding way.
Subsequently, part of the liquids inside the rods has to be slowly removed. The tungsten carbide rods will be put into a room under strictly controlled conditions. After several days, They will be put into special drying furnaces. The drying time depends on the different diameter sizes.
At bout 1380℃, the cobalt will flow into the free spaces between the tungsten carbide grains.
The sintering time is about 24 hours depending on different grades and sizes.
After sintering, you will see the carbide rods blank. This is the main process that how the powder to cemented carbide rods blank.
After sintering, can we send it to the warehouse? ZZBETTER carbide's answer is no.
We will do a series of rigorous inspections. Such as testing the straightness, sizes, physical performance and so on. The tungsten carbide rods will be stocked in our warehouse or refined in our center-less grinding department.
