What is Pure Waterjet Cutting?

undefined

As we know, waterjet cutting can be divided into two kinds of methods. One is pure water cutting without abrasive, and another is abrasive waterjet cutting with abrasive.

What is Pure waterjet cutting?

Pure waterjet cutting uses pure water to complete the operation. This process is ideal for soft and medium-hard materials. During pure waterjet cutting, the pure waterjet cutting generates the pressure and speed of the water on the material to be machined. Pure waterjet cutting uses a different style of cutting head than abrasive waterjet cutting. The cutting head used for pure waterjet cutting has no mixing chamber and no nozzle. The water exits the cutting head directly after passing through the orifice, creating a very thin, focused stream of water that produces an extremely fine and precise cut. This makes pure waterjet cutting ideal for soft materials.

Waterjet cutting materials

Pure waterjet cutting is used for soft materials. With a diameter of a few hundredths of a millimeter, the pure water jet cuts the material like a knife. Pure water cutting is used for cutting seals, rubber, leather, fabric, foam, food products, paper, and thin plastics. Compared with abrasive waterjet cutting, waterjet cutting is more suitable for thinner materials. Pure water cutting usually requires a very fast machine, as the cutting speeds are considerably higher than with abrasive cutting. The typical materials that are cut with pure water also require an additional support surface to support the thin and soft material during cutting, such as aluminum, stainless steel, and so on.

Advantages of waterjet cutting

1. Environmentally friendly. Pure waterjet does not need as much power or is contaminant sensitive.

2. During pure waterjet cutting, very little or no heat generation is generated.

3. Highly accurate. The cutter is capable of making high-precision cuts or carving out 3-D shapes. It is also very useful in drilling holes or intricate shapes and is able to work on cavities that are inaccessible via other methods.

4. Perfect for light materials.

5. Minimal damage to the workpiece.

6. Perfect for food processing and other hygiene-relevant processes.

Disadvantages of waterjet cutting

1. Not suitable for thick materials.

2. It uses green technology:

3. cutting process does not leave behind any hazardous waste.

4. It allows for the recycling of scrap metal.

5. The close loop system allows the process uses very little water.

6. The process leads to environmental pollution.
